Short overnight disruption scheduled for Methven water supply

There will be a six-hour disruption to the water supply in Methven township overnight on Thursday (31 August) as key work takes place on the new Methven drinking water treatment facility.

Water will be cut off between 9:30pm to 3:30am this Thursday (31 August) to enable the replacement of an outlet valve on one of the reservoir tanks at the new Methven water treatment plant. Once the contractors have replaced the valve, they will then flush the pipelines.

Residents are encouraged to put aside some water in the evening for use during the work period. A water tanker will also be available outside of Methven Medical Centre until water is restored.

Council Infrastructure and Open Spaces Group Manager Neil McCann says the new membrane filtration plant is on track to be fully commissioned in the next few weeks.

“Construction is complete, the filtration equipment is installed and we’re now flat out testing everything before it’s switched over."

“This will be a massive upgrade for Methven’s drinking water. We know the community has dealt with a lot of disruption over recent years and we’re looking forward to seeing the end of boil water notices.”

Mr McCann says an open day for the community to tour the finished plant is being planned.

The membrane filter itself has now been installed, which will remove 99.9 per cent of micro-sized contaminants. The water will then be disinfected with UV light, chlorinated and fluoridated before being stored in the reservoirs.
